Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
