Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
