British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
