Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
