A Number of Injured as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts Delta Flight Arriving in Sydney

Multiple passengers and crew were hurt when a Delta flight from LA to Sydney experienced significant turbulence on Friday morning.

Delta Flight 41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson informed. Several cabin crew members sustained injuries.

Emergency medical services said they treated five individuals, and took a trio to the hospital with relatively minor issues that comprised spinal discomfort and migraines. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.

This marks the latest incident of planes encountering turbulence, with researchers pointing out that shifting climate patterns is a major factor.

On board were nearly 250 travelers and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the official said, stating that the plane touched down "safely" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on the day in question.

Paramedics said they received a call just only 180 seconds before the plane landed, and emergency vehicles were ready and waiting at the airport.

Why in-flight bumpiness is growing increasingly prevalent - and more severe.

During the past year, two dozen individuals sustained injuries when another Delta jet, flying from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, experienced "severe" turbulence just a couple of hours into the transoceanic journey, and was forced to make an unscheduled landing.

Recently, passengers and crew on a certain international flight went through a frightening brief five-second bout of severe turbulence. One passenger died and numerous people sustained injuries, as unbelted passengers lifted out of their seats and crashed back down.

In-flight turbulence is fairly routine while flying, and while instances of strong or severe turbulence seem to be rising, they are statistically infrequent.

Data suggests that there are approximately thousands of instances of significant in-flight disturbance each year, out of a total of over 35 million journeys that now take off around the world.

Strong atmospheric disturbance is defined as when the up and down movements of a plane passing through disturbed air apply in excess of 1.5g-force on your body - sufficient force to lift you out of your seat if you weren't wearing a seatbelt.

As a changing climate alters atmospheric conditions, experts warn that commercial aviation could become bumpier: temperature changes and changing jet streams in the higher altitudes are projected to heighten the occurrence and strength of dangerous in-flight bumps.
