A Historic Occasion as Liam Rosenior Shatters Barriers

"Liam Rosenior is a top tactician who knows the game back to front, which is the crucial factor.

"But, as Chelsea's first African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest if I said this news does not affect me."

These were the words expressed by Paul Canoville, who made his historic first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench in the spring of 1982.

This week, Chelsea named Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next manager following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also controls the London club.

There have been only 12 of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including those holding temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is he grew up and played locally, he knows this area," added Canoville.

"Whenever children observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, a person who looks like them, from a similar background, who comes from a household that champions what's right… it is profound demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents a huge moment for Chelsea, for London, for every young person with big dreams.

"But right now? Let's back Liam, provide him with the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Exactly Do the Numbers Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea manager back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's first African heritage manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering black English boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present top flight gaffer of colour.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game corresponds with a lack of diversity at executive level.

According to the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, forty-three percent of top-flight players are from black backgrounds.

However, analysis by the equality organization found only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic backgrounds.

At first-team coaching positions, according to figures provided by eleven clubs, the percentage is 2%.

For all coaching positions – including head coaches – from the same eleven clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of his appointment as Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is a wealth of talent present in the black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to show their capabilities. We need to persist in work hard to break those obstacles down."

Furthermore, Rosenior is set to become one of only four full-time British head coaches presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's remaining major leagues regarding national managers.

Sixteen out of twenty first division coaches in Serie A are Italian, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, Twelve of the 18 are German and Ten in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure all young English managers from an academy background are, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly motivating for up-and-coming British academy coaches to see an individual land that job with his background and we hope he will be really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a five-month spell in charge of then-League One side Brentford in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating discrimination in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He started penning articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill arguing that roles must be awarded on merit.

He also made the view he would repeat: how vast lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic heritage.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, he explained how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "emotional", but said he understood the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from France to Chelsea this summer.

In subsequent Guardian columns, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged his support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and authored a public message to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "blatant" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

Chelsea had the Premier League's first black manager in Gullit as well as the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
